Smooth Jive

I've been teaching Modern Jivers to dance smoothly since 1999, so I was fascinated to notice how many references there have been to "smooth" recently.  When 8BEATFUSION asked me to let you know about their "Smooth Sundays" I did a quick search and found all these "smooth" references in the Modern Jive world:

8BEATFUSION - Smooth Sundays - http://www.8beatfusion.co.uk/
Smooth moves & chilled out grooves in the company of some of the UK's top instructors - every month at The Engine Shed, Wetherby, LS22 7SU
Workshop + tea-dance where you can enjoy a couple of hours dancing to slower music of all types  - R&B, country, blues, lazy latin and other chilled out tunes.

Jive Addiction (the Southport Weekender people) http://www.jiveaddiction.com
Play WCS, blues and smooth jive music.

UK Smoooth - http://www.jivin.co.uk/
They used to be called the "JiveVibe Dance & Social Club" but the new name is "UK Smoooth"
"Beware! Once you start Smoooth dancing, neither you nor your partners will want you to go back!"

Ceroc TVhttp://www.ceroctv.co.uk/
Smooth Sundays with a masterclass and a freestyle.

Smooth Jive Fusion - http://www.smoothjivefusion.co.uk
"We offer a wider selection of real music that is more down tempo allowing dancers to experiment with musicality and style."

Ceroc London - http://www.ceroclondon.com
Sunday Smoove - a regular weekly freestyle at the Clapham Jongleurs for Serene Ceroc!

Fresh - http://ceroc.com/fresh/
"Fresh" freestyles with a Groove Room and a Smoove Lounge at Chiswick, Witham (Essex) and more.

Dance Riviera  - http://www.danceriviera.com/
"We are teaching Smooth Jive in our weekly classes."

Utopia - http://www.utopiadance.co.uk - Twickenham, Cricklewood, Evesham, Biggleswade, Derby
"Aimed at those modern jive enthusiasts who love Blues, Soft Latin, R&B and other slightly slower more chilled out genres of music with challenging rhythmic breaks and interludes" - freestyles with ‘specialist’ dance classes – (e.g. Blues, Smooth, WCS, Liquid Latin).

Want2Dance Burton - http://www.want2danceburton.co.uk/
Smooth Blues & Latin Freestyles.

The Blue Room  - http://www.danslika.demon.co.uk/
Sunday freestyles for discerning dancers who like to dance to smooth and interesting music.

That was just a quick scan of the Web - I am sure there are lots more - my apologies to anyone I left out!

So, SMOOTH is definitely the way to go!  Why not find one near you and give it a try?

If you want to make your own jiving more smooth then have a look at The Modern Jive Toolkit - The Ultimate Guide to Smooth Jiving.  This DVD includes sections on smooth footwork, smooth moves, and smooth lead & follow.  Full details are at http://www.modernjive.com/tmjt.html.

This is what people have been saying about The Modern Jive Toolkit:

Roy (Stylz Jive):  "Thought it was excellent. I particularly liked the way you gave terminology to each aspect of modern jive. I found this so helpful. I have been teaching for about 6 years now. Sometimes you know what you want to put across but the way to describe exactly what you want to say, without causing any misunderstanding, can be difficult. I thought the clear way you described the various aspects of lead & follow was brilliant.
"Every teacher should watch this."

Steve (Corporate Dance Company ): "I was impressed by your DVD it was very informative and echoes my feelings about what new and other dancers need to know."

Janice (Northern Jive):  "The DVD is really good for all levels of dancers - I've been dancing 10 years and I was surprised how much I learned from watching it."

David: "I really like the John Sweeney DVD 'Modern Jive Toolkit' - I have a feeling that this will become a Modern Jive 'bible' for intermediate dancers."

The Modern Jive Toolkit DVD is available on-line from www.modernjive.com or you can send a cheque for £17.50 (made out to "modernjive.com") to Karen Sweeney, 69 The Street, Willesborough, Ashford, Kent TN24 0NA.

Original LeRoc Dance Manual

The Original LeRoc Dance Manual was written and produced by Michel Ange Lau in 1996. If you haven't heard of Michel Ange Lau (a key figure in the creation of Modern Jive back in the late 1970s and early 1980s) then have a look at how it all started at http://www.modernjive.com/history1.html

The Manual is a step by step guide for students at all levels providing detailed instruction, accompanied by a photographic breakdown of twenty moves for both the Lady and the Man.

After many years of being unavailable, the manual is now available again from Glyn Bampfield (one of the dancers featured in the manual).  For full details look at http://www.original-leroc.co.uk or contact Glyn (sales@original-leroc.co.uk).
