Frequently Asked Questions

I don't send Spam, all my e-mail is legitimate.

Sadly, unless you're conforming to the new EU & UK legislation, technically you are sending Spam & could be laible to prosecution. You're also at risk of your ISP shutting down your account.

What about security? Can anyone else access my list of subscribers?

No. You will have your own (unique) password to administer your mailing list.

E-mail addresses will never be copied or harvested from your list. I would never jeopardise my professional reputation by stealing other peoples addresses.

What happens to invalid addresses and bounced e-mails?

There are 2 types of e-mail bounces, soft and hard. A soft bounce is a temporary problem, such as an e-mail account being over its size quota. A hard bounce is caused by a permanent error, such as the e-mail address no longer existing.

When you send out a mailing list message, all the error reports that you would usually receive are sent to the list management system. The system analyses each e-mail bounce to determine whether it's a hard or soft bounce. If it's a soft bounce, the error is ignored and if it's a hard bounce, the e-mail address it refers to is removed from the list.

The whole process is automatic, meaning you never have to wade through an inbox full of e-mail errors.

How many subscribers can this system cope with?

There is no limit to the number of subscribers this system can handle. As the service grows, it may however be necessary to upgrade the server on which this system is running.

Why is it important to use a e-mail distribution service?

Many ISP's impose a send quota which limits the number of e-mails that can be sent within a specified period. If you hit your quota, the excess e-mails are often dumped without being sent and with no notification to you.

A very common method of sending out bulk e-mail is to use the 'BCC' field in your e-mail program. This allows you to send your e-mail out to lots of people without revealing their address to the other recipients.

Unfortunately, many spam filters will flag this type of message as 'junk' and you therefore run the risk of the recipient not seeing the message.

A proper mailing list service correctly manages the distribution of e-mail to large quantities of recipients. Each recipient receives a copy of the e-mail which has been generated specifically for them. This ensures the header information (the section of the e-mail a spam filter reads) is correctly formatted, thus minimising the risk of your message getting filed in the bin.

How will subscribers sign-up to my mailing list?

The administration system will generate a simple, unique piece of HTML code which you simply copy and paste into your web site. This will place a sign-up form on your site which visitors can use to subscribe and un-subscribe to your list.

I'd prefer it if my mailing list could be administered under my own web site address instead of 'lists.uk-jive.co.uk'. Is this possible?

Yes, although this service is more expensive. Please contact us for more information.

I already maintain a mailing list and store the e-mail addresses in a spreadsheet / address book. Do I have to manually type them all in to this system?

No! The system comes with an import facility that can easily handle up to 1,000 address at a time. If you have more than 1,000 addresses to import, you can either import them all at once (although the system may take some time processing them), or split them into blocks.
